Norfolk Airport Linux RapidFIDS Upgrade
Tuesday, 16 May 2006 21:02

Norfolk, VA- Norfolk International Airport (ORF) serving the USA’s largest naval port with over 200 flights a day, is an important component of the airport system. ORF recently took a step in increasing its operational prowess by installing InterSystems’ industry-leading RapidAIMS AODB, and RapidFIDS– its Flight Information Display System.

The Intersystems’ RapidFIDS upgrade of the Norfolk FIDS system includes specific upgrades to ORF flight information accuracy. InterSystems implemented two major improvements. First, the install of new streamlined, airport and airline operator-friendly GUIs including InterSystems’ popular Flight Manager GUI. Second, a FAA real-time radar information feed to tell the system exactly when a flight will arrive in ensure information accuracy. All InterSystems upgrades at ORF are done using a Linux operating system. InterSystems is the only North American supplier of Linux based airport solutions.

The upgrade also includes several key physical components, including the latest Graphic Monitor Controller, the Linux GMC6. Based on an embedded Linux operating system, GMC6 introduces innovative hardware technology that eliminates all moving parts in the controller, making it less expensive and longer lasting.

The InterSystems design team worked with Norfolk to reduce the project expense with a solution that allowed Norfolk to keep all their existing millwork. InterSystems installed 122 new 26” LCD flat panel displays as drop-in direct replacements to their 29” CRTs.

The project can only be described as a success, as was reported to InterSystems by Director of Facilities, Dennis Atkins, “The recent upgrade was completed on-time and within budget… we are very pleased by the quality and uniformity of screen displays.” In his expository letter, Mr. Atkins, described the project details and included some comments about our staff, “The installation was seamless, and included training of airline staff. The InterSystems technician worked closely with our staff and made several suggestions for improvements, including programming the visual paging monitors to scroll a screen showing the national weather map, which has been well received by the public.”

InterSystems is pleased with the equipment and workmanship on display with its work in Norfolk International Airport. So is Mr. Atkins, “Thanks for a successful project.”
